鹽.....少許

I'm surprised I haven't forgotten much Chinese over the years. I mean, I try to keep up with it sometimes, but it's not like I get the chance to speak very often. By all rights, I should have forgotten more than I have. I can still type in Chinese (I use the 注音 method with the 倚天 layout). The soft keyboard looks like this:

I memorized it when I was living in China in 1997 and typing all the time. Somehow, 12 years later, I still know where all the keys are. Typing in zhuyin is nice for me, because it solidifies my knowledge of the correct sounds and tones. Typing is also (IMHO) somewhat easier than using a Chinese dictionary. Ask me about that some time, it takes a little explaining.

Yesterday on our trip to Seattle I stopped at Kinokuniya Bookstore and picked up the last twelve books I was missing.

I've been fearing for years that they would have discontinued the old book style and published them with new covers. And right next to my books on the shelf sat an entire new set with new covers. I think I completed the set just in time.

It's bay jing, not bei zhing!

In America it seems common to make fun of Asian people because they can't pronounce 'L's and 'R's properly, but every hour on the news they can't say the 'j'!

I don't understand why this is so hard! Nobody calls me 'Zhacob,' why can't they pronounce Beijing?

How do they expect people to learn Chinese if the pinyin is off? It should say Xian zai ji dian.

It lets you type entire phrases quickly in Chinese. And it's free.
