According to Richard Bartle, today is MUD’s 30th birthday! Today is also my mom’s birthday!
I started playing different MUDs years ago, and they took up way too much of my time. But I really did love playing, and my time on various servers inspired me to start writing my own. And someday I’ll finish that project, but for now I pay homage to the ancestor of online, virtual worlds that has inspired so many other projects as well as my own. You should read the whole post about MUD’s birthday, it has interesting history and lots of Richard’s own observations about why such a thing isn’t really celebrated, or really even talked about very much.
One day a year, the company I work for gives us a day off as long as we use it to volunteer in the community. This year, many of us got together and volunteered our time with Habitat for Humanity North Idaho. They have a small development with about a dozen homes in Post Falls. Several of us did landscaping work, and the rest of us stained a fence. The fence was several hundred feet long, surrounding the entire community, so it was a bigger job than it sounds. Unfortunately, we ran out of stain twice, and the second time it was too close to quitting time to get more, so we had to leave the job unfinished, but it would only take a single person an hour or two to finish.
We had lots of drinks and a pizza lunch, but the feeling of helping people out is the best part of the day.
I just heard about my old pal Laura (from her parents), she had a baby girl last night. Eight pounds and 20 inches long, sounds real healthy!

Today I bought a drywall lift. I was looking around for a place to rent one, and ran across a link to one on Amazon. For only $79! The thing costs just as much to ship, but it’s cheaper than a two-day rental and two missed days of work. It’s also got a lot of good reviews.
Today is Wu Hsiu-Lan’s birthday. Happy birthday, Daisy!
Today is my 3rd wedding anniversary. All of Mexico celebrates this fact. Lots of Americans drink Corona in honor of it, too. My wife and I appreciate the fact that so many celebrate with us.
Today is my brother Jared’s birthday. He’s one year younger than me and has five kids. I’m glad I’m not him, except at tax time.
I don’t think he comes by here, but just in case, happy birthday dude.
