NewsRisible Department Cinematic Titanic News!
October 30th, 2008 —9:44 am

Joel Hodgson of Cinematic Titanic (and MST3K) fame just posted news about a redo of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (see the IMDB entry here). This is the first “re-riff” of a movie since the local-access only Season 0 of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Promising totally new jokes and an in-time-for-the-holidays release (Nov 20 2008), this one is gonna be great!

News Beige Alert!
Posted in News
April 10th, 2008 —10:43 am

Apparently there is a camelnapper running around Athol, just a few minutes north of where I work. My wife called me this morning laughing after she heard about it on the radio. I haven’t been able to find any news stories about it (typical slow North Idaho news sites), but the day is young. I’ll post more information if I can find it.

News Hi-Def Format War
Posted in News
February 19th, 2008 —5:54 pm

Well it looks like the next generation, high definition format war is over. The loser? US. The better features of HD-DVD (like backward compatibility) have lost to stricter copy protection and higher production costs.

I guess it’s a good thing I don’t plan on buying any of this crap any time soon…

Cd'A Federal Courthouse Keep Shoveling
February 4th, 2008 —5:42 pm

They are falling behind at the new Federal Courthouse site because of all the snow. Today, some dude was up shoveling some off the second floor. He didn’t get much done:

time to get shoveling

Also nearby, the weight of the snow knocked down one of our nice trees:

News How Much More Can We Take?
Posted in News
February 1st, 2008 —12:43 pm

Well it just keeps snowing and snowing here. I had another couple inches to scrape off this morning, unfortunately everything underneath the snow is solid ice, even on my daily-shoveled driveway. The roads, however, are clearing up quickly. That means either the temperature is coming up enough during the day, or that the county is salting the crap out of everything. Hopefully it’s the former.

This area has, however, been declared a disaster area by the governor.

Cd'A Federal Courthouse Photo Update
January 22nd, 2008 —3:16 pm

Now that I have my new camera, I can take pictures again. Well, I only needed a new lens, but the difference in price wasn’t that much. Anyway, today they aren’t doing much work on the new courthouse (probably due to the cold). Here’s a photo of what’s been going on lately (click for larger 6Mb jpg):

News Crazy Local News
Posted in News
January 12th, 2008 —12:29 pm

Two things happened that are nigh-unbelievable, both within 15 miles of where I live and work.

First, a man cuts his hand off and microwaves it because it had the “mark of the beast” on it or something. At least he used a tourniquet first.

He used a circular saw! OUCH! My father lost the end of his thumb to a table saw, but holy cow that must have hurt.

Secondly, and much more tragically, a local 7th grade boy died on the hood of his mother’s car in front of his school when he collapsed from heart trouble. The funeral is today.

News Cd’A Area Free Public Messiah Concert
Posted in News
November 15th, 2007 —10:14 pm

Next Saturday, November 24th, there is a free concert being held at NIC’s Schuler Auditorium. There will be a symphonette and a choir performing Christmas selections from Handel’s Messiah.

You can pick up your free tickets at area Super 1 Food stores, they should be at the Customer Service desk now. Get them while you can because they will go fast.

The concert is not recommended for people with young children that can’t sit in one place for at least an hour. My wife and I are both in the core choir. There will be a short rehearsal earlier that day for members of the community that wish to “sing along” with us for certain pieces, but I don’t have any information on that. Our first practice was held in June, so we’ve been working real hard on it. Please show up.

News Goodbye, Fred
Posted in News
August 15th, 2007 —10:06 am

I just found out that one of my all-time favorite authors, Fred Saberhagen passed away at the end of June. His Science Fiction novels are great, as are his fantasy novels. He’s one of the few authors that does both so well, even combined into the same story (read the Empire of the East books and the Swords series).

Fred will be sorely missed, and I’m saddened that a bright, creative light in the world is gone now.
