Afternoon watch, 6 bells (3:17 pm)

Today I'm trying out two new bread recipes today. One is specifically for making bread bowls, and the other is a dark chocolate bread. My new sourdough starter isn't very sour yet, it's only a week old. First loaf made with it didn't taste sour at all. Maybe I'll make another loaf tonight and see how it goes.

I received my copy of Richard Bartle's card game Spymaster in the mail today. I ordered just as I was returning from PAX 2009.

I must say I'm most impressed with the look-and-feel of the design. The cards, pictures, fonts, etc were all well-chosen and carry a cold-war style that contributes great atmosphere to the game. It also came with several blank cards. Good when your spies get assassinated, I guess. By a small child with a teething problem (as opposed to in-game when they face an assassin).

PAX Madness
Posted in Hobbies
Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:30 pm)

Well we survived PAX 2009 in Seattle. It was pretty crazy, and there were tons of sweaty, nerdy gamers all over the place.

We met several famous people there, including Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek TNG fame), Steve Jackson, Jonathan Coulton, and Jhonen Vasquez.

We played several new board games, some that aren't even available yet. My favorite was Nanuk which we'll be ordering as soon as possible. The Stars are Right was also really fun, although a little bit harder to get started with. I don't mean this in a bad way, though. It's just such a different type of game than I've played before. Well-worth learning and playing.

We also got two Waiting For Santa packs for Munchkin. They still aren't available for purchase through normal venues, but they had a very limited quantity available at PAX. I was too late to get any of the Fairy Dust packs.

We also met the folks from Flying Frog Productions, creators of Last Night On Earth. We met the actors that play Sally and Jake and got autographed photos from them. We also picked up the expansion for LNOE and preordered three new expansions coming out later this year.

Experimental Sourdough

First dog watch, 4 bells (6:00 pm)

I have two batches (three loaves) of sourdough to bake tonight. They're rising for the second time right now. I made them up yesterday, my starter (a Giza culture) is a slow riser. They look good, though. I like my normal recipe, but I'd like to try to find an even better recipe—this is the first experiment. I'm going to start baking in another hour or two. If I remember, I'll take some pictures!

More Liar’s Dice

First watch, 6 bells (11:09 pm)

We've been playing more Liar's Dice tonight. About 3 more hours today. Calling it quits before it gets out of hand.

Edit: Had to correct a spelling error from my iPhone. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The WordPress app wouldn't even tell me it had posted this entry…

Last night my youngest brother Wes came over and we played Liar's Dice (or Pirate's Dice, etc) for at least four hours. It's a fun game! The variation we have uses dice with a skull instead of a single pip that is "wild." It makes the game real interesting.

Tracking the MUD

First watch, 4 bells (10:09 pm)

Well my MUD project is back up and working after a big reorganization of globally-scoped data. Yes, it is evil. No, there isn't much of a way around it. It's not a lot, but it needed to be wrapped up in a single class to simplify referencing to in other objects.

Things are running smooth again, but now I have to go back and take out some place holder room code and move its functionality to the new zone system. I changed a helper class over to be a namespace while I had things taken apart, since it never had any data associated with it, just functions. I'm using online GDCU course offered by Ian Schreiber (it's about game design in general), and it's been real interesting so far.

Last night Lorien and I stayed up late playing Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot and Munchkin.

I just signed up for the Game Design Concepts course online (it's free!).

Also, just talked to Lorien about attending Penny Arcade Expo 2009 in Seattle this September.

Munchkin Death!
Posted in Hobbies
Afternoon watch, 8 bells (4:29 pm)

Today at lunch we played Munchkin Booty (Susan won). I would have won, had I not encountered a level 50 jellyfish!

I was at level 9 (you win when you hit level 10), so I would have won had I not got clobbered by cards.

In the fray were the following:

Ergo, ((5+4+3)x2)x2 = 48, plus 2 for the Jellyfish's original rating. A level 50 Jellyfish! Holy Carp! See the evil hand here (insert obligatory crappy iPhone camera disclosure here).

Fortunately I rolled a 5 and ran away! Ha!

PS If you don't know about Munchkin, I highly recommend it as a great card game to play with friends.

Knit Hats
Forenoon watch, 4 bells (10:15 am)

I want two knitted crocheted hats:

FSM Hat and a cunning Jayne Cobb hat.

Suggestion: Make the noodles fall to the sides, not down the front. It could be a pull-over hat instead of a tie-under-the-chin hat.

New Board Game
Posted in Hobbies
Last dog watch, 1 bell (6:46 pm)

Our friends Ellie and Wade will be interested to know we bought a new board game today. It's Mwahahaha!, a game about mad scientists and world domination. It's a big heavy box with tons of cards, dice, cardboard, etc. It looked pretty cool, and you certainly feel like you got your money's worth when you open up the box and can't hardly put everything back in.
