Chicks Dig Giant Robots

The best Giant Robot show ever had to be Megas XLR. This past weekend I managed to find the entire series online (it's not available commercially). Although technically not anime, I put this in with it because it makes fun of all giant robot shows.

New Shows on Cartoon Network

Afternoon watch, 1 bell (12:37 pm)

Last night (for our usual Monday Anime night) we watched Trinity Blood and Bleach, two new shows that Cartoon Network wisely decided to add to their lineup. Because just about everything else they're playing sucks.

Monday Anime Night

Forenoon watch, 1 bell (8:49 am)

Last night was Anime Night, but for some reason Cartoon Network has decided to impose an Anime drought on us—they don't play anything cool anymore, at least nothing cool that's new. There are only a couple of shows left for us to watch. One of the shows we do watch is Eureka Seven (I hate how they pronounce eureka, it seems like every actor says it differently).

Anyway, with our spare time we began watching Babylon 5. I've seen episodes before, but never in a row so I never got the real story of what was going on, and Lorien and her uncle both say the writing for that series was incredibly good.

Afternoon watch, 8 bells (4:05 pm)

Somehow last weekend we got Desert Punk volume 3. According to Amazon (and Funimation's website), it's not out until the 23rd. We purchased it at BestBuy last Saturday. Hmmm.

Well, you may remember I started watching Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi a while back, and last Monday night I finished the series. It had a good ending, but I'll stick with my first post, the first five episodes were funnier than the rest of the series.

SakuraCon 2006
Posted in Advice, Anime, Reviews
Forenoon watch, 6 bells (11:14 am)

As promised in my Spot the Nerd post, here's my review of our trip to SakuraCon 2006. Overall I'd have to say it wasn't that great. The organization was atrocious—if they've improved a lot from previous years then they really sucked before. They were moving classes around with absolutely NO notification! For example, Sunday afternoon there was a class we wanted to go to, but it got moved to Friday evening. There were no announcements in the opening ceremonies or anywhere else, unless you went to the room and looked at its posted schedule—that was the only place you could see a schedule change, on a room-by-room basis.

They ran out of lanyards for convention badges even before all the early-registration people got to register on Thursday evening.

The Anime theaters (there were four) that played shows 24 hours per day kept rearranging the schedule, so if there was a show you wanted to see, chances were you already missed it, or they put something else on instead. The printed schedule wasn't very useful. And they never did have an online schedule for you to actually decide what to do before you got there.

They also scheduled the Charity Auction at the same time as the Closing Ceremonies (a very bad deal for the Make-a-Wish foundation).

The vendors were there in force, but there weren't any great deals to be had.

All in all, it was an interesting weekend, but I don't think any of us will be going to another one of these without some serious proof that it's going to be way better.

I could only recommend this if you are a very hardcore Anime fan. Most of the people there were juvenile, with a very juvenile sense of humor. The entire staff was made up of everyday fans, so there wasn't much organization to speak of.

What Happened To Saiyuki
Forenoon watch, 4 bells (10:14 am)

Okay, last weekend I was able to actually speak to people from ADV Films, the good guys behind Saiyuki, which will quite likely remain my favorite Anime of all time for all time.

After Saiyuki, another company called Geneon got the distribution license away from ADV and did their own thing with Saiyuki Reload and Saiyuki Reload Gunlock. So all of a sudden all our favorite characters have new voices, and even their names are pronounced differently! It's an EXTREME disappointment (DO YOU HEAR ME GENEON???)—it's like they didn't even watch the first series.

So here's what happened. After ADV's successful beginning with Saiyuki, Geneon decided to fund Saiyuki Reload production in Japan, which automatically gave them distribution rights here in the US. So it's not like ADV lost a bid or anything, Geneon just beat them by funding the continuation of the series in Japan first.

And that's why the new series sucks so much. Geneon ruined an awesome show that had an amazing voice cast.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Forenoon watch, 3 bells (9:31 am)

I started watching a new Anime show last night, called Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, and it was pretty darn funny. At least it started out that way, the first 5 episodes I kept laughing out loud. I don't know if it was getting less funny or I was getting more tired, but the next couple weren't as interesting. One of the early episodes, maybe episode 2, was a funny parody of Final Fantasy-type games. I'll talk more about the rest of the series after I've seen it, but I can recommend the first disk as a pretty funny one. Lots of getting hit in the head with a paper fan, which I never got tired of in Saiyuki. Which reminds me, I'm going to write about what happened to Saiyuki.

Anime: Desert Punk
Forenoon watch, 4 bells (10:02 am)

I picked up the first DVD of Desert Punk last Friday. Their main website is down for some reason. Probably because they don't have me as a sysadmin.

But that's beside the point. Desert Punk was funny, and had tons of great lines. I watched the first episode and was hooked. It made me glad I picked up the collector's edition (it was only $5 more). I would recommend this to anyone after Saiyuki. If you haven't watched Saiyuki you have no business watching any other anime until you do. But after that, check out Desert Punk. And get in to Fullmetal Alchemist as well, it's got an awesome story.

Taken from Saiyuki.com. L and I have been watching Saiyuki lately, a friend of her loaned us her DVDs. I think we're about at episode 22 or so now.

Late night again

Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:49 pm)

Last night I got to bed at 2:30am. I was out with L and her uncle (SH), watching anime. It was fun, and L feels guity about keeping me up so late (she keeps saying she'll be the death of me. 🙂 Perhaps, perhaps not. I do enjoy the time I spend with her, no matter what the hour.

She did say it was a bit weird that I would tell people my girlfriend keeps me up late (no, it's not what you think, really!). I thought that was pretty funny.
