One Problem to the Next
Afternoon watch, 4 bells (2:10 pm)

Now that it's got a brand new battery, my wife's car has another problem. The radiator fan is kicking off and on every second or so. It's probably been doing it all night. Nothing is on (obviously) but it won't stop running until it's drained the battery.

Bad Battery
Afternoon watch, 1 bell (12:50 pm)

My wife's car battery is dead. It's also extremely corroded around the terminals and down the side of the battery. The negative lead came off with a socket, but the positive is completely stuck on and I'm having trouble removing it. Even with visegrips. Not really sure what I'm going to do here…

New Home Computer
Posted in Tech
Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:55 pm)

Last Monday I ordered a new computer to use at home. I've been relying on the laptop provided by the company I work for. It's convenient and portable, and has staved off the need for a new computer at home for several years. Unfortunately, Lorien's laptop is small, and my old desktop just doesn't compare (I built it about five years ago) to new machines.

After building several new Intel Core i7 boxes for the office, I really wanted to get my hands on one for home use. They're fast. I needed an upgrade, and so did Lorien.

Now, to top it all off, our company is considering porting our software to run on the Mac platform. With this possibility in the future, as the IT manager I have a serious need to understand how to use a Mac for the first time in my career.

In the interest of killing as many birds with one stone as possible, on Monday I ordered a new iMac with the Core i7 processor. It should be here by the end of the month. Being a Linux/UNIX guy at heart, it's not a tough step to take but I do expect there to be a learning curve. Fortunately, with the recent redecoration of our living room, I have a spot already picked out for it!

High Def
Afternoon watch, 3 bells (1:42 pm)

I saw my first Blu-ray movie this weekend. I didn't think it'd be such a big deal, but really, it's a whole new world of clarity. Lorien had Meet the Robinsons on Blu-ray, and Costco has a Sony Blu-ray player for $70 off ($109 at checkout), so we put the two together (with our spiffy new TV) and I must say—it's pretty amazing.

The only regret I have is that now I'll want to buy everything on Blu-ray, and I already have so many DVDs…

I've modified the way my blog takes comments, Java is no longer required (only Javascript). If I get a flood of spammy comments, though, it's coming right back!

First dog watch, 2 bells (5:21 pm)

Last night I finished building six DVD shelves and a new TV stand. We had to rearrange the entire living room, but despite the fact we don't have enough room for both couches anymore (hint: I'm not terribly sad about this), it feels bigger to me. I really like the new layout.
