Today is my oldest niece Jenifer's birthday. She's 13, and my younger brother's daughter. Having no kids myself, this makes me feel old.

Portland Again?!
Posted in General
Forenoon watch, 5 bells (10:30 am)

We're heading to Portland this afternoon to spend Thanksgiving with some family. Technically, the festivities are in Coburg, but we'll be staying in Portland (on an extremely small spare bed I might add). We're looking forward to a trip to Powell's and all the other food-related places we like to visit in Portland (Otto's Sausage Kitchen, Marinepolis Sushi Land, etc etc). Oh yeah, and we'll eat turkey too!

Quiet Time

Afternoon watch, 4 bells (2:03 pm)

It's been quiet time here at Scurvy Jake's Pirate Blog. Lorien was out of town for the last couple of weeks visiting her sisters in Texas, and I was buried up to my eyeballs with work. Fortunately, since Lorien was out of town it meant I could put in a lot of extra hours to get it all done. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I did.

It's all over now except for the loss of sleep. Which I expect never to make up.

Apache and PHP Extensions in Windows
Posted in Tech
Forenoon watch, 6 bells (11:28 am)

I've been fighting an error with my PHP installation in Windows with Apache related to loadable extensions. In my error log, I kept getting the errors:

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'c:\\Program Files\\PHP\\ext\\php_mssql.dll
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'c:\\Program Files\\PHP\\ext\\php_pdo_mssql.dll

Interestingly enough, if I ran PHP through the console, it loaded PDO and mssql just fine, the problem was only with the environment in Apache. Turns out the ntwdblib.dll wasn't being located by Apache. I could probably have added the PHP path to the environment variable PATH, but the easiest solution was to copy the dll to the Windows\System32 directory. A restart of Apache after that cured the problem.

The Quest For Sequestering
Posted in General
First watch, 7 bells (11:48 pm)

Tomorrow I'm sequestering myself in my office. I have far too much work to do and so little time to get it done. There are no less than three projects waiting for me when I finish my current one. And everything is top priority right now, too. This always happens when we get closer to releasing a new version of our software, though. Plus, it's easier to put some more hours in when Lorien is out of town…

Last Saturday’s Music
Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:31 pm)

I have a little clip from last Saturday's jaunt to O'Shay's pub for some live music by my good friend John. Now with authentic pub background noises for free!

Did I mention that later this month I'm going to see Great Big Sea and Kevin Burke and Cal Scott in Spokane?

Happy Birthday, Scott!

Today is Scott Walker's birthday. He is one of my oldest friends, and by a freakish coincidence we are now related by marriages. My stepsister's husband is Scott's brother-in-law.

Happy birthday, Scott!

I tried to like this book. I really did.

I stopped reading it around page 120 because I ran across the third case of the author using then instead of than. It completely took me away from the story each time it happened, and by the third time I was done.

How an author, and a popular one, can get away with such sloppy work is beyond me. I wonder if anyone even looks at his work. Certainly neither he nor his editor use a proofreader, not to mention the fact that the editor couldn't have read the book without uncovering the problem.

There was another error, but it was a simple typo: the word everything was spelled wrong. Even a spellchecker would have caught that error!

I give this book 0 stars for failures on many levels. The publisher should have caught the errors. A spellchecker should have been run. The author shouldn't have made the mistake in the first place.

An Awful Vision

Forenoon watch, 5 bells (10:49 am)

I just had an awful vision of a horrible, doomed future where Google leaves Sesame Street 40th Anniversary images up all year long like a Disneyland anniversary. *shudder*!
