Forenoon watch, 5 bells (10:32 am)

To the guy selling the two snowmobiles on Mullan Ave in Post Falls:

I think you'd have better luck if you sold them before snowmobile season. People are less likely to buy something at the end of a season when they can't use it.

Software Bug Fail
First dog watch, 2 bells (5:03 pm)

A cow-orker recently entered a bug in our tracking software for an error message with our software security. Apparently it is formatted all wonky with a couple of random newlines.

The results were duplicated on two machines: both running Windows 7. Once the two of us responsible for correcting this "bug" realized this, we failed it with extreme prejudice. If you get weird results from a beta OS don't come crying to me…

Evil Koalas
Posted in Strangeness
Afternoon watch, 8 bells (4:12 pm)

Apparently Jhonen Vasquez spotted some koalas on his flight over to Australia.

I have never thought the same of koalas since that animal planet show about them and how they eat their mother's poo when they're young.

Disgusting, fuzzy little s***-eaters. Koalas are evil. They stare at you with their dull eyes, but really they're waiting to steal your bank account information and take out loans for RVs in your name so they can destroy your credit and drive around the outback in their giant, shiny, poop-filled RVs and play didgeridoo CDs way too loud.

That Magic Age
Afternoon watch, 2 bells (1:13 pm)

I have reached that magic age where the fillings I got when I was younger are now starting to be a problem. About six or seven months ago I had one fall apart. This time they caught one before it broke and fell out, but they had to drill out the old filling and prep the tooth for a new one. This tooth may eventually have to be crowned, but it's fixed for now.

Unfortunately, I have to go back again next week because I have another one on the other side of my mouth. With my resistance to Novocaine and other numbing drugs, trips to the dentist have always been unpleasant. My dentist said I'm the most difficult patient in his entire practice as far as numbing goes. Um, yay for me?

I tweeted the whole experience, or as much of it as I could anyway. It's hard to type with four hands in your mouth. I expect to be numb for several hours now. In fact, the receptionist said "I hope you ate lunch before you came in!"

I didn't think that would be a very good idea. I think it's bad etiquette to eat just before a dentist appointment. Or if it isn't, it should be. Well, skipping a meal never killed me before, so I think I'll be okay.

Sour Dough
Posted in Hobbies
Afternoon watch, 2 bells (1:04 pm)

Last night I made sourdough bread. I haven't made any for a while, and thought I'd start up a new batch. It didn't rise much, so the bread came out heavy, despite my efforts to help it rise in a slightly warm oven.

Anyway, after about an hour and a half of attempted rising, I just decided to bake it. Holy cow it came out good. It had a great sourdough flavor, and tasted excellent with butter. I'm thinking about making some more tonight, with just a touch of yeast to hopefully help it rise.

Freakishly Large
Posted in Strangeness
Last dog watch, 8 bells (8:03 pm)

We have some friends that raise chickens. They have eight chickens. Apparently these chickens lay up to 20 eggs each day. Some of these eggs are freakishly large, too.

Check this out:

huge eggs

And my hand is not small. These eggs are tough, too. I mean really hard to crack. Apparently they feed them oyster shell, the chickens eat it up, and their eggs are solid.

Yesterday I got Blood of the Vampires in the mail from Cinematic Titanic. The included card? It was signed by J. Elvis. I'll be reviewing it soon, if I can get over my Boom Blox addiction.

Like a Shotgun Blast

If you're easily grossed out, you should skip this post…you have been warned.

I had a bathroom gross-out moment earlier today. Somehow, someone pooped on the back rim of the toilet. I don't know how they got it there with the seat down unless it came out like shotgun shot. I mean seriously, how do you do that?? I had to go use the other bathroom. Nasty.

Stupid iPhone
Posted in General
Last dog watch, 1 bell (6:45 pm)

Today, for the second time, my iPhone stopped receiving calls. Obviously, I don't know when this happens. I'm going to have to put it on a regular reboot schedule just like my Windows servers.

Sure, I love all the features the phone has. It does more than any other one I've ever had. But it's not any better than any of the others I've had, it just has more features. By the way, my Motorola Razr never went "off the air" like my iPhone has.

After rebooting my phone, I suddenly had several missed calls and voicemails that I didn't have before. Please tell me in what way this is better if I am wrong.

Macs are the same as any other hardware/software platform. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Get over it already.

PS iPhone OS 3 will have SMS messages and you'll be able to test your in-development apps (if you have a Mac to develop them on, anyway 🙁 ) directly on your iPhone. Wow. Amazing. It's only taken a couple of years to get such broad functionality built in. What's next, capturing video??
