Bad Grammar
Afternoon watch, 8 bells (4:27 pm)

I hate to be a grammar nazi, but some things just make me wonder where our language is headed.

Case in point: a shopping bag from OfficeMax had a long strip of printed coupons attached to the plastic bag. This is the first time I’ve seen something like this, and I pulled it off (it was perforated at the top and bottom for easy removal), and I was reading the coupons to see if I could put one to use before it expired. Here’s what it says:

Present this coupon with your in-store purchase made between December 31, 2006 thru January 27, 2007

Okay, so I understand why some abbreviations (like thru instead of through) get used so much, but in this case it makes no sense to me at all. It should have said between December 31, 2006 and January 27, 2007—and that shaves even another letter off that offensively long word between the dates.

Didn’t anybody proofread it before they went to manufacture millions of these plastic bags?

What Have We Wrought?
Afternoon watch, 3 bells (1:45 pm)

My dad, uncle, and I have won an auction on eBay.

1937 Cord Beverly body parts

Cord and coat of arms on the engine

The last thing I needed was another project…

1937 Cord Beverly—we just bought a 70 year old car. If you can call that a car yet.

Network Wiring
Posted in Tech
Forenoon watch, 3 bells (9:47 am)

Last night I went over to Schlotzsky’s to help my uncle do some network wiring. They’re getting some new cash registers and needed to have RJ45 jacks put in around the restaurant. He had the CAT5 run earlier, I just terminated both ends. It didn’t take too long, except for the face plates that the RJ45 jacks fit in had this weird part that you had to run the CAT5 through before you terminated it at the jack. I assumed that it was like the other jacks I’ve used in the past, and it snapped in from behind so you could remove the entire assembly without disturbing the wire termination. I was wrong, and had to redo three jacks. Doh!

Then we had sandwiches for dinner. Mmmm.
