Shortening the Lists

Afternoon watch, 5 bells (2:50 pm)

My Archives list was getting too long. As of yesterday, it got its 36th link (three years of monthly archives)—and that's just too much for me to look at. Yes, there's some prestige in seeing a long list of monthly archives (eg. look at me everyone, I've been blogging a long time!), but it gets annoying after a while. I suspect people rarely use it anyway.

I also shortened the Categories links. I wrote some quick widgets in WordPress that take care of this functionality. Their site had most of the info I needed, but they didn't have a nice Category switcher that you didn't have to submit with a button. So I modified things enough for it to work.

You can get the Dropdown Archive widget here, and the Dropdown Categories widget here. Make sure you save them and rename them to have a .php extension, then place them in your wp-content/plugins/widgets/ directory.

PS This theme is now Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict, also.
