Bruce’s New Site

Last dog watch, 2 bells (7:20 pm)

Bruce Campbell's website has been down for several days at least, but as of today (and perhaps even earlier) it is back up with a slightly-new look to it. Less content (that's not a bad thing—less content equals less frequent updates required). The old TV schedule was almost always out of date...

Weekend Work
Posted in General
Last dog watch, 1 bell (6:53 pm)

I stopped in the office this evening to finish preparing a computer for a new employee that I needed to have ready first thing tomorrow morning. I would have had it done a week ago, but I had to fight several bad parts (RAM, mostly, but also hard drives) before I could get things up. As it stands, it only has half the RAM and HDD space I intended (2Gb RAM, 320Gb SATA RAID-0 was my plan). But it's mostly done now. I already had the obligatory Sunday meal with the in-laws (it was delicious, as usual). I'm only missing the dessert (brownies) and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I'll stay here as late as possible, though, to avoid the Tom Selleck movie that will inevitably be playing until my eyes bleed were I with them.

Office Party
First dog watch, 2 bells (5:27 pm)

This afternoon we had a party in the office. We basically shut down at 4pm today and had a catered party in the breakroom. It was very nice, the food was delicious. We talked about our consumer product line, and how we've grown to almost 30% market share in less than 2 years (with basically a new product). Things are going well—it's one of the reasons I like working for the company: every year we do just a little bit better than the year before.

Linux Bandwidth Monitor
Posted in Tech
Morning watch, 8 bells (8:24 am)

I ran across a new bandwidth monitor for my Linux systems, the best one I've used so far, called vnstat. It has a simple interface and a clean, easy-to-read report. And it doesn't take up any noticeable CPU time. It plugs directly in to the kernel and does all its work there.

Parrot Does Hard Time in the Pokey
Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:57 pm)

A parrot was sentenced to do time until it confessed who its true owner was. I wonder if my cats would be reliable enough for this type of test.

I don't think Five would, she loves everybody. And Mr. Pookies is such a snob he doesn't do lap time with anybody. He will crawl under a blanket with you if he's sleepy, though (mid-day usually).

Pokey the Penguin

Afternoon watch, 1 bell (12:36 pm)

I've read Pokey the Penguin for years, and it's always good for a laugh. Nice break from the usual web comics. Plus he wars with the Italians.

PS Nobody gets it, it's just funny. Don't worry if you don't understand.

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1??
Posted in Tech
First dog watch, 2 bells (5:11 pm)

Thanks Mike for point this one out: Microsoft has released SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 already. Now why can't they roll up Windows XP Service Pack 3 so I don't have to download 36 patches when I install a new SP2 machine?

MSIE Slammed by Dvorak
Posted in Tech
Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:43 pm)

I ran across an article by John Dvorak slamming Internet Explorer

If the problem is not weird legal cases against the company, then it's the incredible losses in productivity at the company from the never-ending battle against spyware, viruses, and other security problems. All the work that has to go into keeping the browser afloat is time that could have been better spent on making Vista work as first advertised.

Ouch. And don't forget:

Of this I can assure you. People will not stop buying Microsoft Windows if there is no built-in browser. Opera and/or Firefox can be bundled with the OS as a courtesy, and all the defaults can lead to Microsoft.com if need be.

Of course we already know that this will never happen, since Microsoft is a creature of habit. So it will forever be plagued by its greatest blunder ever. Have fun, boys.

This would be funnier if it wasn't so true.

Cat Strangenesses
Forenoon watch, 5 bells (10:33 am)

It was a normal morning for me and Mr. Pookies and Five. Mr. Pookies got in the shower, then I did. I picked up Five to put her outside for the day, and swooped her down by Mr. Pookies while listening to her growl at him (it's never not funny). Since Mr. Pookies was wet from his shower, Five started licking his fur on the top of his head, but she did it while she was growling at him.

Ice Age 2
Posted in Reviews
Forenoon watch, 3 bells (9:49 am)

Last Saturday night Lorien and I went to see Ice Age 2 at the theatre. It was funny, but not as funny as the first one. Plus, I just can't stand Ray Romano, his voice grated on my nerves the whole time. And I hate his stupid TV show.

Recycled Animation
First watch, 2 bells (9:18 pm)

I ran across this quite by accident, and the site is entirely in Russian, which just looks like backwards letters to me, but it's quite uncanny. Here's how Disney recycles its animation sequences. How they found these images and realized what was happening is a mystery.

Of course, they could just have a couple of kids that watch the movies over and over.

And over.
And over.
And over.

How Much More??
First dog watch, 1 bell (4:44 pm)

I paid $35 to fill up my 13 gallon gas tank this morning. I think it's time the government took over the oil industry and cut the super-high-paid executives out of the loop. When Exxon, Mobil, and Shell post record profits it's time to take a stand.

Adding Books
Posted in Books
Morning watch, 6 bells (7:13 am)

I've added a few of the books I have "on deck", waiting to be read. I have found that a good portion of the books I have are no longer in print, but may still be found used, even at Amazon.

Perhaps someday I'll fill in the "Books I've Read" part—but that will be a very long list. As in: I'd rather have a barcode scanner to speed up input.

Scout O Rama

Afternoon watch, 8 bells (4:15 pm)

Well, it wasn't so bad, except the sleeping-on-the-ground part. It turned out to be a beautiful day, so it was nice to be outside. I got about 4 hours of sleep, and am considering taking a nap before meeting Lorien at her parents' place...

Another Shot Weekend
Posted in General
Afternoon watch, 8 bells (4:11 pm)

Well this weekend is over already, and it's just starting—I'm off to Scout-O-Rama at the Fairgrounds for an overnight camp and an all-day Saturday activity. Last weekend it was work. I swear nothing is getting in my way of getting some me-time next weekend.
