Fedora Core 5

First dog watch, 2 bells (5:11 pm)

I’m currently installing Fedora Core 5 on my spare machine (I downloaded the DVD install image last weekend). I dropped SUSE 10 OSS for the time being, although I may end up going back to it. I had the worst time setting up a 19″ LCD to be a rotated view. I got it to work once, but never again. And I can’t get Xen virtualization working in it. So I’m giving FC5 a shot. So far the installation is pretty simple, quick to go through. You can pick your own packages, but the list isn’t very big. Despite that, pretty much everything I wanted was there, except for ncftp—the best FTP client ever.

City Council Meeting Tonight
Posted in General
First dog watch, 2 bells (5:06 pm)

Tonight the Post Falls City Council meets and will be reviewing the zoning issue I posted about last month. We’re going to show our support for not going commercial, but I don’t think there’s anything they will do about it. There is an exchange planned (at bare minimum an overpass, but possible a full freeway exchange) for Greensferry at I-90, which will make the area an important commercial corridor.

Birthday Present; “Maddog” Hall Brings me a Root Beer
Forenoon watch, 2 bells (9:17 am)

I totally forgot to mention that when my mother-in-law returned from Texas (she was visiting two of her daughters), she brought back a gift from my brother-in-law Mike—root beer! I have a new root beer to add to my collection: Berghoff I believe is the name. I’ll get a picture up soon.

This reminded me of a highlight of my technical career. While at an ApacheCon in 2000 or 2001 (I’m trying to remember which one), I met Jon “Maddog” Hall and he gave a speech about the direction of the tech industry and how we should all start learning Mandarin Chinese. When he said that, I knew I had to chat with him (since I already speak Mandarin). We talked for a while, and he even brought me a root beer.

PS A little research yielded their old site, and it was 2001.
