Today I was busy. My boss asked me this morning if I could move our colocated servers to a new facility before the end of the day. I had to prep an old server to put in the current colocation facility so I could take the two servers from there and put them in the new facility. I then had to drive over to Liberty Lake and get things set back up. I prepared a lot of the tedious work in advance so I wouldn’t be working all afternoon modifying DNS records. We still had a few issues bringing the new servers online at the new facility—first off, they weren’t ready for us even though they said they were ready. We finally got our connection going, and I had already had the servers set up on the right IP addresses, so they just started working when it came up. I reloaded all three of my DNS servers’ configurations and we were in business. I’ve just been cleaning up a few straggling issues.
All in all, it went pretty well. We shut down at 2pm and put the old server in place within 10 minutes, then by 4pm our new servers were up and our DNS changes were made. Not something I’d rather do every day, but it was good. We need the extra bandwidth, and our new colo facilities are pretty darn nice.
