Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:44 pm)

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of comment spam. In some ways, it’s good—it means my blog can be found fairly easily by searching the ‘net, but on the other hand, nobody likes spam. I’ve stopped it mostly by moderating any comment containing a link. I ban people using a regular expression based on the REMOTE_ADDR environment variable (the IP address of the commenter). The problem is that I’ve only got it on the first page, so programs that have been written to just submit to the specific comment page will bypass my imposed ban. I’ve got an idea on a new, SQL-based solution for banning IP’s, but haven’t written any pages yet.

Afternoon watch, 7 bells (3:38 pm)

Well, in the spirit of all the kids returning to school, I began a new book project today. This book will be a 400 page, 8.75x11.5 book, by far the largest size I’ve ever put together. If I figure out a good way (I don’t have a plough to use), I may even out the edges, but I haven’t decided yet.

I’m considering binding it with leather cords instead of linen binding ribbon, but I haven’t decided yet. I folded down 25 sheets of 23×35 acid-free paper to make 25 signatures of 16 pages each. This will undoubtedly be bound with some type of bookcloth, perhaps quarter-bound with red leather if I really like it.
