First dog watch, 4 bells (6:11 pm)

Well, I saw Steve and Veronica and their kids (Ritchie and the twins, James and Allison) for the last time before their trip home tomorrow morning. I think Allison is the prettiest baby girl I've ever seen. They are talking about moving up here, though, so hopefully that works out and I get to see them often. It's so nice to have family close by.

Turkey Day
Posted in General
Forenoon watch, 5 bells (10:51 am)

Not much happened, and, as I suspected, festivities were held at my brother's house. There were many people there that I didn't know, from his wife's family. My throat was sore yesterday, and being at their house (due to the smoking) just made it worse, as I thought it would. Today I feel yucky.

I did get to see James and Allison, my twin cousins. Allison is the cutest little girl. My uncle Steve and aunt Veronica sure have their hands full. If the twins comprised a whole, James would be 2/3 of that, and Allison 1/3—she's a bit smaller than he is, but she sure is cute.

Pre-Thanksgiving binge exercisers
First dog watch, 4 bells (6:29 pm)

Today we saw our first competition for the racquetball court in months. I think it's because Thanksgiving is coming up. We'll probably see them for a few more days and they'll forget about exercising again. But they'll come back when they make New Year Resolutions to exercise...for another week or so anyway.

We lifted today, and though we were both quite sore, we still made our goal of 4x15@150. Next Monday we add on 5 pounds and see what happens. We played one game of racquetball, which I kicked butt at. Well, not totally, I won 15-11. At least it's a comeback from my gimpy 15-2 game yesterday.

w00t, upgrade time
First dog watch, 4 bells (6:26 pm)

I just finished a big OS upgrade, took half the day, but I had to rebuild the binaries for apache2 and php. I got the latest versions of each and we're sitting pretty now. I think even all the virtual hosts ( and subsidiaries, and are working fine now. Phew.

Mouse mileage

Forenoon watch, 7 bells (11:43 am)

I've got a program that monitors mouse movement, and since I started using it (some time ago, though I can't remember exactly how long), I've moved my mouse 96.1 miles.

Yesterday’s games
Forenoon watch, 2 bells (9:17 am)

Yesterday MP and I played some more racquetball, but I was going real easy on my foot, so he won every game. He even almost shut me out (15-2) on the last game. The first game was 14-15 though, I gave him a good run for his money even with my gimpy foot...

Bench presses
Morning watch, 6 bells (7:12 am)

MP and I finally hit 4 sets of 15 reps of our current weight (150) yesterday. I think we'll do it one more time, then add weight again. After weightlifing, we played more racquetball, but since last Friday, my left foot has been hurting, so I went easy on it. MP and I played almost a whole game, dogging eachother as usual pointwise, until DD showed up and asked if we'd play him after our game. We just invited him to join us on the spot for cutthroat, since that's what we were looking for in the first place. We played 2 more games (I didn't win any because I was going easy on my foot, but I'm quite sure I would have otherwise).

Appliance Repair
Morning watch, 6 bells (7:08 am)

I juggled this one between Things that are Cool and Things that are Not Cool, but finally decided it wasn't cool. "Why isn't the Samurai Appliance Repair Man cool," you might ask? Well, let me tell you:

It all comes down to one simple principle. Some people just shouldn't be let on the internet. Freaks, weirdos, and those that haven't got enough good sense to know what they're doing or even why they need to be on the internet. Apart from that, those that have way too much time on their hands really should avoid authoring HTML documents.

Okay, I'll admit it. The site is kind of funny. He runs The Samurai School of Appliantology, but in no way advocates the type of technical adjustments I thought he would—things such as the technician's tap, or just plain running your sword through the washer.

Overall, I give the site an F+. F for the expected but barely-there humor, + for the usability of the online repair manuals and links to appliance repair sites, which I'll never visit...

Happy birthday, Billy Connolly!

Afternoon watch, 2 bells (1:29 pm)

Today is Billy Connolly's birthday. I have one of his CD's, and it's hilarious—mostly because it's very difficult to understand when he uses his thick Glasgow accent.

Kangaroo leather

Afternoon watch, 2 bells (1:08 pm)

Well I found Kangaroo leather on the Internet and just had to order some. Actually, I was looking for some leather for my bookbinding, and ran across some sites that touted it as a great leather for binding. So I decided to give it a try. Should be here real soon. We'll see how easy it is to work with. The book I got recently (Bookbinding for Book Artists) has a great section on 1/4 leather binding—part of the reason I got the book in the first place.

Snow and Ice
Posted in General
Afternoon watch, 2 bells (1:02 pm)

Well it snowed again last night, about 3 more inches on my driveway. I hate shovelling the snow, but at least my Cruiser is parked in the garage and I don't have to clean it off every morning. I think I'd move out of the area if I had to continue to scrape my windows and brush snow off.

Anyway, the snow was packed down by the cars so tightly, it shined like glass. That's not the kind of stuff I like to drive on. But on my way to work (driving slow—usually 5mph under the speed limit for safety) I get these jackasses tailgating me. Like the roads aren't dangerous enough for them, they have to ride my bumper. Crazy people.

Afternoon watch, 4 bells (2:09 pm)

I ran across this while surfing around...

You are Next
Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next". They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

Nothing happened yesterday
Posted in General
Afternoon watch, 1 bell (12:56 pm)

Not much was going on yesterday, it snowed. Didn't get to play any racquetball or anything. But that'll change today. We got two 8-port KVM switches in, to fix up the server room real nice. I have to come in tomorrow for a half-day and take everything down for the "upgrade".

Game on
Last dog watch, 2 bells (7:20 pm)

Well today MP and I did some weightlifting before racquetball, as we are wont to do. If you combine all the weight we did today, that's the equivalent of lifting about 8400 pounds (each). Phew.

I took the first match, but not by much. The second one was going even tougher, when I finally invited JP to come down (he was watching and lifting weights—the racquetball court has a window to the weightroom up high) and play cutthroat. MP won our cutthroat game. He had to leave, though, so JP and I played another game (my 4th of the day). I beat him, although he gave me a run for my money. Not quite like MP does, but close. I was pretty worn out, though, after lifting weights and playing 3 previous games. Anyway, I got hit in the armpit by the ball, I have a nasty looking red welt there, but it doesn't sting anymore.
