Game on

Last dog watch, 8 bells (8:26 pm)

Today I played racquetball with MP. We played four games, and I won them all. My game was on today. I think back on the last 2 months and see a great improvement in both of us. When we first started it was hard to finish just one game. Today I could have played another one.

Tomorrow’s trip and some thoughts
Posted in General
Forenoon watch, 6 bells (11:28 am)

I'm heading out tomorrow to pick up LT at the Seattle airport. It'll be a long drive, but at least we'll have more time to chat than last year. I don't think M(L)P is too fond of what I'm doing though, and sent me packing on a day-long guilt trip while I considered what she said. When you're friends with someone, you don't ask for returns or reimbursements on favors or things you do out of friendship, unless of course you are in need yourself. Friendship is about giving up a little bit of yourself, or your time. Yes, it's about receiving too, but what is given to you must be out of friendship, and not of a sense of duty or a feeling of debt. I try not to ask anything of any friends, but will accept whatever of themselves they are comfortable with giving up. Yes, often I do give more than I recieve, but if that doesn't bother me, why should it bother someone else? I'll be the judge of when my friendship is being taken advantage of. Sometimes it seems we've lost track of what is good and right. Is it so bad to sacrifice a little time and money for someone you've been friends with for almost a decade? M(L)P had some good points, and I know she's trying to help, but sometimes I wonder if she really understands who I am and where I come from..

A few things about stuff I don’t like
Forenoon watch, 6 bells (11:15 am)

[rant]
First off, I subscribe to several mailing lists. I understand that not everyone is grammar-conscious, or even good at spelling. But mixing up then and than?? Come on, we're not in grade school. I stop reading posts when I run across more than 2 errors like this. If you can't organize and write your thoughts in an intelligent, intelligible way, don't expect me to read them.

For the other side of the illiterate balancing beam, there are those that can't read - and complain about something they are ignorant of because they failed to read what they were given. This is a work-related frustration. I understand our customers aren't always the brightest light bulbs you can buy, but I do expect them to be literate to operate a computer and interact with other people with it...

Church today

Forenoon watch, 1 bell (8:51 am)

I somehow got myself stuck into attending ward meetings today. One with MP that used to be ML (and not my coworker MP) to give her the stuff I picked up for her in Portland last week, and the other I promised Pres. LC that I'd stop by the singles branch for a visit. I'm wearing my new Pirate Tie today. I think an eyepatch may be frowned upon, even though halloween is coming up...

JT and M

Forenoon watch, 1 bell (8:48 am)

I saw JT and his wife M last night (and their baby girl). They were having some trouble with their computer. M made a really delicious dinner of pasta and mozarella cheese and sauce, it was super good. I'll have to ask for that recipe sometime.

First dog watch, 3 bells (5:57 pm)

Played 2 games of cutthroat today, with MP and DD. I won both times, the second game I came from behind (6-9-13) with a 9 point run on my serves. Victory is sweet today.

Northern Lights
Forenoon watch, 4 bells (10:27 am)

Well today there is a Coronal Mass Ejection headed for us at 2 million mph. The good news is that most of America and Europe has the chance to see a really neat light show. It's rated as a 3 on a scale from 1-5, 5 being the highest. Not that it matters, since 3 is in the middle, so it'd be the same either way 🙂

Recipes

Forenoon watch, 4 bells (10:00 am)

I'm working on putting mom's recipes online for the family to use. It's a bit of coding, and an interesting PHP/SQL challenge to get together, but it will be a fun project, and is probably 50% done already...

Last minute visits from friends
Forenoon watch, 3 bells (9:58 am)

LT emailed me this morning, she's going to be in Seattle on Wednesday, and since I'm a sucker for a pretty girl (who isn't?) - and an old friend - I'm playing chauffeur for a few days. So even though I was just in Portland, I'm headed back there next week. Looks like the itinerary will be Seattle to Portland Wednesday night, come back to Coeur d'Alene on maybe Friday afternoon, then back to Seattle Monday morning for the flight out. We'll get hours of car-time in, which is better than the last time I saw her (about an hour and a half visit over a year ago).

The National Novel Writing Month looks cool. I've been toying with the idea of writing for quite a while (read: several years), but never worked up the nerve to start writing. Here's to hoping for a good experience.

Last dog watch, 8 bells (8:04 pm)

On Sunday, Jodie and I drove to the coast. Well, more accurately, I drove and Jodie rode along. We had lots of fun just driving and talking. The weather wasn't the greatest for taking pictures, though I got some good seagull pics, I'm sure). We had lunch at Mo's West, at Otter Rock (baked oysters and clam chowder - it was soooo good...) then did some shopping at Depoe Bay. We drove back to Portland and took a couple pictures of a neat old abandoned house.

It’s a small world after all…

Last dog watch, 3 bells (7:58 pm)

Just like the ride at Disneyland says, it's a small world after all. Saturday, upon visiting my sister in Portland, and deciding how to spend our day, we went across the street to where AH (my sister's husband, who's nickname is Woody) was helping out working on a house. I was walking up the sidewalk when lo and behold, I heard the exclamation 'Jacob!' and upon looking up, whom did I look upon but CP, LT's sister! I knew she and her family had moved to Portland, but had figured there was no way on God's green earth that I would run into them. Imagine my surprise finding them right across the street from my sister's house! Though I didn't get to see K, her son (I imagine he's quite big by now...), and although I only saw C for a brief moment, it was very nice, and she looked very happy and healthy. (She extended her hand to shake with me, but I made sure to give her a hug instead 🙂 Her husband J had quite a beard growing, too...
